How do I find out if someone is in jail in WV? ›

To find offenders incarcerated in state prisons, use the WV Prison Offender Search. Interested persons may query the database with an offender's last and first name, or an Offender ID (OID) number (the first four numbers, at least).

To find someone in jail, you can start with your State Department of Corrections. If you go to the state's web page, you will be able to find a phone number to contact. You'll also find resources like Sex Offender Registry, Offender Contact information, and Offender Visitation forms.

About the Facility

The Central Regional Jail and Corrections Facility is located in Flatwoods, just off of Interstate 79 in Braxton County. The facility formally opened on February 22, 1993 and was the prototype of the state-of-the-art podular design that is present throughout all of the West Virginia Regional Jails.

Inmates. The Jail holds both male and female inmates for its four member agencies, federal and state responsible inmates, and contract inmates for other localities. The Jail's inmate population varies from day to day, in 2016 the average daily population was 814.

There are six federal prisons in West Virginia as well as six federal prison camps.

After serving the state for 129 years, the penitentiary was closed in 1995, when a new facility was constructed in Mount Olive, Fayette County.

A super-maximum security (supermax) or administrative maximum (ADX) prison is a "control-unit" prison, or a unit within prisons, which represents the most secure level of custody in the prison systems of certain countries.

INMATE PLACEMENT (SECURITY LEVEL)

(1) An inmate with a placement score of 0 through 18 shall be placed in a Level I facility. (2) An inmate with a placement score of 19 through 35 shall be placed in a Level II facility. (3) An inmate with a placement score of 36 through 59 shall be placed in a Level III facility.

According to §15–2–24 of the West Virginia Code, West Virginia criminal records are not public records and are, therefore, unavailable to the general public. Notwithstanding, the law authorizes a select few to access the confidential West Virginia criminal records for specific purposes.
